Presentation of Case

A 49-year-old man was admitted to the hospital because of pain in the knee.

The patient had been in stable health until three months earlier, when he began to have pain in his left knee, which gradually worsened and awakened him during the night. He was referred to this hospital.

Twelve years before admission, a motor vehicle accident had resulted in an open fracture of the midshaft of the patient's left tibia, which healed without incident.
