Presentation of Case

A 19-month-old boy was admitted to the hospital because of a febrile illness and refusal to walk.

The child's immunizations were up to date. His mother was Portuguese, and his father was Brazilian. Two months before admission, during a six-week visit to Brazil, the boy had been treated with penicillin for suspected streptococcal pharyngitis; no culture was performed. Examination of the urine showed minimal protein. Hematologic laboratory tests were performed (Table 1).
