To the Editor: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) tabulates and reports AIDS cases in the United States biannually. Using these official data, we analyzed trends in the distribution of AIDS cases according to sex, race or ethnic group, and various categories of exposure to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV); we analyzed trends for five-year intervals using end-of-the-year data from 1989, 1994, and 1999.1,2,3 Both the 1993 change in the case definition of AIDS4 and the increasing use of highly active antiretroviral therapy for HIV-infected persons5 complicate the interpretation of these surveillance data, but they probably have a limited . . .
