To the Editor: Packer et al. (May 31 issue)1 report that the Carvedilol Prospective Randomized Cumulative Survival Study was stopped early on the recommendation of the data and safety monitoring board because of a significant beneficial effect of carvedilol on survival. The patients in the study had a mean ejection fraction of 19.8 percent. The mean duration of follow-up was 10.4 months. At the time that the study was terminated, the mortality rate was 16.8 percent in the placebo group and 11.2 percent in the carvedilol group.
