To the Editor: Ridker and colleagues (June 28 issue)1 demonstrated that the rate of acute coronary events among subjects with a base-line low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol level below 149.1 mg per deciliter and a C-reactive protein level above 0.16 mg per deciliter was higher among those given placebo than among those treated with lovastatin in the Air Force/Texas Coronary Atherosclerosis Prevention Study (AFCAPS/TexCAPS). The authors conclude that C-reactive protein measurements may be useful in targeting statin therapy in patients with relatively low lipid levels.
