To the Editor: We describe a patient in whom a surgical-site infection probably developed from contact with his pet dogs. A 59-year-old man underwent posterior C1–C2 transarticular screw fixation and fusion for cervical instability. Five days after discharge, he was readmitted with an infection at the surgical site. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a collection of fluid located in the posterior cervical area and extending to the epidural space. Emergency incision and drainage were performed; the procedure was complicated by a myocardial infarction, which required transfer to the intensive care unit.
