To the Editor: Wu et al. report on the benefits of blood transfusion in elderly patients with acute myocardial infarction and anemia (Oct. 25 issue).1 Their data show that among patients with hematocrit values higher than 36.0 percent, those who received blood transfusions had a higher risk of death within 30 days than those who did not receive transfusions. The authors suggest that among older patients with acute myocardial infarction and anemia, transfusions benefit those with hematocrit values of 30.0 percent or lower.
