Almost 250,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occur annuallyin the United States; the majority are attributed to coronaryartery disease. About half of these episodes appear to be causedby ventricular tachyarrhythmias in the absence of acute myocardialinfarction. With occasional exceptions, secondary preventionin the form of implantable cardiac defibrillators is chosenfor survivors of cardiac arrest. More than 95 percent of victimsof out-of-hospital cardiac arrest die during the episode, butthe few who are quickly resuscitated usually live many additionalyears if they receive a defibrillator. The extremely low survivalrate after out-of-hospital cardiac arrest is the motivating. . . [Full Text of this Article]
