Nineteen years ago, the first report of two outbreaks of hemorrhagic colitis linked with Escherichia coli O157:H7 infection was published in the Journal.1 Both outbreaks were associated with hamburger consumption, and the "burger bug" was born. In the intervening years, our understanding of the complexities of the epidemiology and ecology of this important pathogen has evolved. Another milestone is the report by Crump et al.2 in this issue of a large outbreak of E. coli O157:H7 infection among visitors to a dairy farm.
