Nitric oxide is a highly reactive molecule with many biologiceffects. Its function as the "endothelium-derived relaxing factor"that regulates vascular tone is a central feature of its roleas a signaling molecule. Endothelial cells use arginine to producenitric oxide gas, which diffuses into the surrounding smoothmuscle, where it induces relaxation of vascular smooth muscleand dilatation of blood vessels (Figure 1).
