President George W. Bush's recent pledge of $15 billion to fighthuman immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and AIDS is anotherwelcome sign of the increased priority placed on the globalepidemic. The announcement calls for a strong focus on preventionalong with increased access to treatment. The critical stepsnow are to ensure that these resources are appropriated rapidlyand that they complement other critical health and developmentinitiatives.
