Pulmonary emphysema is an irreversible condition resulting from the destruction of alveolar septa in the lung. There has been no effective treatment for emphysema that has progressed to the point at which substantial air-space destruction has occurred. Since emphysema takes your breath and exercise capacity away, without any hope that they will return, there was almost unbridled enthusiasm when a surgical procedure was devised to reverse some of the devastating effects of the disease.
