To the Editor: Phosphate-based cathartic agents are commonlyprescribed for bowel cleansing before colonoscopy. They mayhave serious side effects, including seizures and acute renalfailure. Although the latter complication has been reportedon at least three occasions,1,2,3 the pathophysiology and histologiclesion underlying it remain unknown. In this report, we describea case of phosphosoda-induced acute renal failure that was evaluatedby biopsy.
