To the Editor: The rate of death from any cause among patients undergoing dialysis in the United States remained steady at 17 to 18 percent per year between 1996 and 2000.1 Thus, the finding by Teng et al. (July 31 issue)2 that patients undergoing dialysis who are treated with paricalcitol have a lower mortality rate than patients who are treated with calcitriol (18.0 percent vs. 22.3 percent per year) is more consistent with a harmful effect of calcitriol than a beneficial effect of paricalcitol.
