Ductal carcinoma in situ of the breast (also called intraductalcarcinoma) consists of the clonal proliferation of cells thatappear malignant and that accumulate within the lumens of themammary duct. There is no evidence of invasion beyond the epithelialbasement membrane into the adjacent breast stroma. This lesion,which is a precursor to invasive ductal carcinoma, is frequentlydiagnosed on screening mammography.
