Last October, soon after the opening of the current Supreme Court term, a lawyer who often argues cases before the Court noted with surprise that Chief Justice William Rehnquist was looking unusually pale and fragile as compared with his appearance six months previously. Some observers also noticed that Rehnquist's voice sounded hoarse.
