Endothelial injury and dysfunction are thought to be criticalevents in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. Thus, understandingthe mechanisms that maintain and restore endothelial functionmay have important clinical implications. A series of clinicaland basic studies prompted by the discovery of bone marrowderivedendothelial progenitor cells1 have provided insights into theseprocesses and opened a door to the development of new therapeuticapproaches.
