The case brought by the Department of Justice against the tobaccoindustry — the largest civil litigation in U.S. history— has become mired in controversy. Projections suggestthat about 23 million Americans, or one of every two currentsmokers, will die prematurely because of a disease caused bytobacco use. The lawsuit called for actions to remedy harmsthat have resulted directly from misconduct on the part of thetobacco industry.
