Many persons argue that certification of a specialist indicatesthat he is up-to-date and competent at the time of examinationbut this does not prove that he continues indefinitely thereafterto be competent and aware of all important new knowledge inhis field. This is obviously true and, as the certifying Boardsbecome established and as they complete the examination of thelarge group of physicians already practicing the specialties, they may find it desirable to issue certificates that are validfor a stated period only.
