On February 14, 2006, a U.S. District Court issued an unprecedentedruling concerning the California execution by lethal injectionof murderer Michael Morales. The ruling ordered that the statehave a physician, specifically an anesthesiologist, personallysupervise the execution, or else drastically change the standardprotocol for lethal injections.1 Under the protocol, the anestheticsodium thiopental is given at massive doses that are expectedto stop breathing and extinguish consciousness within one minuteafter administration; then the paralytic agent pancuronium isgiven, followed by a fatal dose of potassium chloride.
