To the Editor: The excellent review by Juweid and Cheson (Feb. 2 issue)1 on the powerful diagnostic use of 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (18F-FDG) as a tracer for hypermetabolic neoplasms raises interesting questions about its potential use as a therapeutic agent. Other tumor-avid radiopharmaceutical agents such as 90Y- or 131I-labeled B-cell antibodies can produce regression of lymphoma when given in therapeutic doses,2 and a potential exists for the same approach with tumor-avid positron-emitting compounds such as 18F-FDG.
