Rapid advances in biomedical imaging have greatly enhanced the ability of physicians to diagnose and treat a variety of diseases. This enhanced ability often leads to improved outcomes for patients. However, these improvements, combined with a rise in entrepreneurial activity by physicians, the practice of defensive medicine in order to thwart malpractice suits, and the power of patients who demand more tests, have led to sharp increases in the volume of imaging services and the expenditures for them.
