Nontraumatic subarachnoid hemorrhage is a neurologic emergencycharacterized by the extravasation of blood into the spacescovering the central nervous system that are filled with cerebrospinalfluid. The leading cause of nontraumatic subarachnoid hemorrhageis rupture of an intracranial aneurysm, which accounts for about80 percent of cases and has a high rate of death and complications.1Nonaneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage, including isolated perimesencephalicsubarachnoid hemorrhage, occurs in about 20 percent of casesand carries a good prognosis with uncommon neurologic complications.2This review focuses on aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage.
