Leukotrienes ("leuko," from white blood cells; and "trienes,"three conjugated double bonds) comprise a family of productsof the 5-lipoxygenase pathway of arachidonic acid metabolism. The cysteinyl leukotrienes C4, D4, and E4 account for the biologicactivity that was previously termed "slow-reacting substanceof anaphylaxis," and the efficacy of antagonists to type 1 cysteinylleukotriene receptor (CysLT1) in asthma validates the importanceof cysteinyl leukotrienes and CysLT1 in this disease.1 Thisarticle reviews both established understanding and recent advancesin our knowledge about leukotrienes.
