Major depressive disorder is now recognized as one of the world's greatest public health problems: it is common, typically follows a relapsing or recurrent course, disrupts the performance of social and vocational roles, and is associated with increased medical morbidity and reduced life expectancy.1 During the past several decades, antidepressant medications have become the most widely used means to lessen the suffering and impairments associated with this heterogeneous illness.
