To the Editor: Larsen et al. (April 12 issue)1 describe salutary changes in many markers of inflammation in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus treated with anakinra, an interleukin-1–receptor antagonist. They report a significant difference in the glycated hemoglobin level at 13 weeks in the anakinra group as compared with the placebo group, but the mean end-point values in the two groups were in fact identical. Although there was a change from baseline in opposite directions in the two groups, the baseline means were different, so the values in the groups might have been expected to converge somewhat by regression . . .
