Although it is difficult to study or even quantify, out-of-hospital cardiac arrest contributes greatly to total mortality in industrialized countries. Often such an event is the first manifestation of cardiovascular disease, and more than 90% of patients do not have identifiable high-risk characteristics. The estimated U.S. incidence of sudden cardiac arrest is 166,200 per year, with a median survival to hospital discharge of only 6.4%.¹
