Only 50 years ago, the function of human platelets was barely understood and antiplatelet drugs were unknown — although aspirin had been available since the end of the 19th century. Once a special interest of hematologists who investigated the mechanisms of bleeding disorders, platelets now command the attention of cardiologists, neurologists, angiologists, and oncologists, as well as pharmaceutical and instrumentation companies.
