Platelets help to maintain blood circulation by controllinghemorrhage after an injury to the blood-vessel wall that causesphysical or biochemical disruption of the endothelium. The developmentof an activated platelet plug at the site of trauma seals thevascular lesion and brings about hemostasis. The membrane-orientedprocesses of subendothelial adhesion of platelets, granule release,cohesion, aggregation, and plug stabilization involve severalwell-characterized ligand–receptor interactions1 and willnot be discussed further in this review.
