To the Editor: In her letter to the editor, Wysowski (Jan. 1 issue)1 notes that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) received reports of 23 cases of esophageal cancer in patients who had received oral bisphosphonates, and she calls for studies that investigate whether bisphosphonate use is associated with an increased risk of this cancer. The reported cases of esophageal cancer occurred after a relatively short duration of use, with a median time to diagnosis of 2.1 years.
