To the Editor: We have two questions about the trial (A Placebo-Controlled, Double-Blind, Parallel Arm Trial to Assess the Efficacy of Dronedarone 400 mg bid for the Prevention of Cardiovascular Hospitalization or Death from Any Cause in Patients with Atrial Fibrillation/Atrial Flutter [ATHENA]) (ClinicalTrials.gov number, NCT00174785 [ClinicalTrials.gov] ) reported by Hohnloser et al. (Feb. 12 issue).¹ Dronedarone was designed to reduce the risk of thyroid-related and pulmonary disease associated with amiodarone, and in two previous randomized, controlled trials it was shown to be more effective than placebo in maintaining sinus rhythm and controlling the ventricular rate during recurrences of atrial fibrillation. . . .
