In this issue of the Journal, Yu et al. report results of the Pacing to Avoid Cardiac Enlargement (PACE) study, a prospective, double-blind, multicenter trial designed to determine whether biventricular pacing is superior to right ventricular apical pacing for the prevention of adverse changes in left ventricular function.¹ The inclusion criteria focused on patients with a left ventricular ejection fraction of 45% or more who required pacing because of high-grade atrioventricular block or sinus-node dysfunction.
