To the Editor: During further analysis of the data used in ourstudy of single-drug therapy for hypertension in men (April1, 1993, issue),1 we discovered two errors in the computer program;these errors affected the results that we reported in Figures2 and 3 of the article. One error permitted a small group ofpatients who had not completed one year of maintenance therapyto be excluded from the analysis, even though we had plannedan intention-to-treat analysis. The second error was due toan unrecognized deletion of an entire line of code that providedthe definition of treatment success. This error also led toan underestimation of the percentage of successes. Correctionof the error did not result in an even increase in this percentageacross treatment groups, so that there were some changes inthe order of the drugs.
It is important to note that the basic conclusion of the studywas not affected -- that is, race and age have an importanteffect on the response to single-drug therapy for hypertensionin men. Table 1 shows the correct values for Figures 2 and 3.
