From July 1987 to September 1989, 193 patients with cirrhosis (127 men and 66 women; mean age, 56 years) underwent screening for hepatocellular carcinoma at our institution. Clinical evaluation, serum alpha-fetoprotein measurements, and real-time ultrasonography were performed every six months. The
