To the Editor: Thromboembolism is a frequent and serious complication of valvular heart disease, particularly mitral stenosis1,2. Recently, sensitive molecular markers for assessing thrombotic and fibrinolytic states have been identified3. We measured the levels of these markers in blood from a peripheral vein, the right atrium, and the left atrium of eight patients with mitral stenosis who were undergoing percutaneous mitral valvuloplasty.

The study group consisted of three men and five women (mean age, 53 years; range, 39 to 61) with rheumatic mitral stenosis (mean mitral-valve area, 0.69 ±0.06 cm2) but without left atrial thrombus. Seven patients . . . [Full Text of this Article]
