The National Commission on Sleep Disorders Research was established by Congress in 1988 "to conduct a comprehensive study of sleep disorders and to develop a long-range plan for the use and organization of national resources to deal effectively with sleep disorders research and medicine"1. The report of the commission, which was recently published,1 indicates that each year the lives of millions of Americans are disturbed, disrupted, or destroyed by the consequences of sleep disorders.
