To the Editor: Cocconi et al. (Aug. 20 issue)1 reported enhancementof survival in patients with metastatic malignant melanoma bysome 20 weeks after treatment with dacarbazine and tamoxifenas compared with dacarbazine alone. In a cautious accompanyingeditorial, Guerry and Schuchter called for confirmatory studiesin more uniform prognostic groups2. We have examined the roleof tamoxifen in enhancing chemosensitivity in a group with aparticularly bad prognosis -- namely, patients with advancedmalignant melanoma in whom chemotherapy has failed, a situationin which response rates are less than 10 percent.
