A 1400-page textbook by a master clinician and teacher with unparalleled experience in both hospital and ambulatory child neurology has to be taken seriously and can be consulted with confidence. This was so for Ford's Diseases of the Nervous System in Infancy, Childhood, and Adolescence, which first appeared in 1937 (Springfield, Ill.: Charles C Thomas) and was sustained through six successive editions over four decades. It is equally the case for Jean Aicardi's new Diseases of the Nervous System in Childhood, published in 1992 as part of the Clinics in Developmental Medicine of the London-based Spastics Society.
