A two-year-old boy was admitted to the hospital because of cervical lymphadenopathy and fever.
He had been born to a 35-year-old woman by normal spontaneous vaginal delivery at 39 weeks (her third pregnancy). Because of thick meconium he spent 48 hours in an intensive care unit and required oxygen for 24 hours. Leukocytosis was found, and antibiotics were administered for two days. At the age of six weeks he was admitted to another hospital because of possible sepsis. Antibiotics were administered for 72 hours and were discontinued when all cultures were reported to be negative.
