In 1961, when Dr. Joseph Garland met with me and his other two associate editors for our weekly review of manuscripts submitted to the Journal, the meeting took place in a small office in space shared with the Massachusetts Medical Society and the Boston Medical Library. Decisions were made by the four of us, and accepted manuscripts were soon on their way to our talented copy editor, Robert O'leary. Now, more than 30 years later, weekly meetings with the editor-in-chief continue, but they take place in a large conference room at the Countway Library of Medicine and include 17 participants. . . .
