A 27-year-old woman was admitted to the hospital because of secondary infertility and a bladder mass.
The patient was a native of Zimbabwe. She resided in an urban area and frequently visited relatives in the countryside, where she swam in streams as a child. The patient was in good general health and had delivered one full-term infant by emergency cesarean section for fetal distress six years earlier; her son was well. During that pregnancy an ultrasonographic examination of the abdomen and pelvis was reported to show a "problem" with her bladder, which was considered not serious and was not evaluated
