It all began about 20 years ago, in early 1994, when somebody joked with Hillary Rodham Clinton that "an apple a day keeps the doctor away," noting that this would provide the best cost control imaginable. The idea took root as if both Johnny and Joanie Appleseed had been spreading their wares across the land. "I wonder," Mrs. Clinton is reported to have replied, "whether there really is anything to that old houseperson's tale." Thus began the search for evidence.
