The heart shares with other organs a susceptibility to immune-mediatedinjury. However, the unique clinical expressions of myocardialinflammation have only recently received investigative scrutiny.It is now clear that numerous cardiac diseases characterizedby the presence of inflammatory cells within the myocardiumresult from immune sensitization to endogenous or exogenouscardiac antigens. The consequent reaction of cardiac myocytesto immune injury can range from reversible modulation of theirelectrical and mechanical capabilities to cell death.
