Several reports in this issue of the Journal deal with the potentiallydisastrous situation of antibiotic resistance1,2,3. The currentantibiotic-resistance crisis differs from those of the pastbecause several different organisms are involved and becausethere are no immediate solutions on the horizon. The consequencesof resistance include higher mortality and greater morbidity, such as neurologic damage in children in whom meningitis iscaused by a pneumococcus not recognized as resistant or forwhich alternatives to first-line antibiotic therapy are lesseffective. Infections with organisms resistant to antimicrobialagents lead to longer hospitalizations and greater expense,4as exemplified by . . . [Full Text of this Article]
