To the Editor: An outbreak of tuberculosis resistant to rifampin,isoniazid, streptomycin, and ethambutol occurred in our institution1in association with conversions among our health care workersafter tuberculin skin testing. Sixteen workers entered a six-monthinvestigational trial of ofloxacin (800 mg a day) and pyrazinamide(1500 mg a day), after approval by the appropriate review boards.
Adverse effects due to these drugs were very common. Of the16 workers, 14 discontinued prophylaxis after less than sixmonths; 13 workers had one or more adverse effects, includingarthralgia (7 workers), gastrointestinal distress (6), hepatitiswith alanine aminotransferase levels of 491 . . .
