A 27-year-old woman had severe hypertension and hirsutism duringthe last trimester of a normal pregnancy. In the six monthsafter the delivery of her child, she noticed increasing skinpigmentation and continued weight gain, and insulin-requiringdiabetes mellitus developed. Her prepregnancy weight was 160lb (73 kg), and her weight six months after delivery was 240lb (109 kg). Her previous health had been excellent, and shehad no family history of obesity or endocrine disease. She wasnot a smoker.
