In 1983, Warren and Marshall discovered a spiral urease-producing organism in the human stomach, later classified as Helicobacter pylori1. H. pylori has been shown to be strongly associated with peptic ulcer disease, and antibiotic therapy to eradicate this organism is an important treatment for duodenal and gastric ulcers2. In many countries, the prevalence of H. pylori infection in adults is 35 percent or more, although most infected people have no symptoms.
