To the Editor: Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is a major cause of chronic liver disease and of hepatocellular carcinoma. Several strains of HCV exist; distinct genotypes can be identified by sequence comparison of the viral genomes.1 Recent evidence that the genotype of HCV may influence the clinical course of hepatitis C2 and the response to interferon therapy for this disease3 suggests that methods to identify the genotype may become clinically useful. Methods based on the polymerase chain reaction, however, are expensive, time-consuming, and limited to highly specialized laboratories.
