Polarized epithelial cells transport ions, water, and macromoleculesfrom one biologic compartment to another. These processes includeabsorption by enterocytes and renal tubular cells; secretionby hepatocytes, endocrine cells, and exocrine cells; and exchangeby alveolar and capillary endothelial cells1,2. The performanceof these functions depends on a surface membrane organized intostructurally, biochemically, and physiologically distinct apicaland basolateral domains containing different ion channels, transportproteins, enzymes, and lipids.
