Hyperthyroidism is common, affecting approximately 2 percentof women and 0.2 percent of men1. There are three principaltreatments -- antithyroid drugs, radioiodine, and surgery --all of which are effective, but opinions differ about the indicationsfor them2 because no single treatment regularly results in permanenteuthyroidism.
